From the 2009 vintage a new dream becomes reality for the Pazo de Barrantes Winery: La Comtesse de Pazo Barrantes. A contemporary white wine that shows the versatility of the Albariño to reach new heights of freshness, fragrance and exuberant aromatic power. La Comtesse delights us with an elegant complexity and an enhanced aromatic richness which proves that the character of the Albariño wine can reach surprising levels when treated with meticulous and careful use of oak barrels.
Own single vineyard: Pago Grapes are sourced from Cacheiro single-vineyard, an old-vine plot within our 12-hectare estate called Pazo de Barrantes located in the Salnes valley (Rías Baixas D.O. Galicia).
Grape variety: 100% Albariño.
Manual harvest: In 18kg cases, 4th October, 2012.
Winemaking: First of all the albariño bunches are de-stemmed before pressing. Afterwards the grapes are gently pressed slowly and gently to respect and boost the intense aromatic potential obtained from these old vine grapes. Juice settling. Temperature controlled alcoholic fermentation (10 ºC) takes place in a 3.000-litre French Allier oak vat for 30 days. In the pursuit of gaining more volume on the palate and a balanced mouth feel, the wine is left in contact with its fine lees for 6 months.
Ageging process: La Comtesse remains in this same wooden vat for 12 months further. Afterwards the wine is aged in bottle for another 12 months before release.
Bottling date: 1st August, 2014
Limited release: 4.665 (0,75 L).
Pairing: La Comtesse lets us be bolder and combine it with different textures and flavors: cod baked in papillote with rosemary and honey, roasted chicken and vegetables, crab cakes with vegetable chips and bacon-wrapped scallops, pan-seared with butter.
Serving suggestions: We recommend to serve the wine around 13º-14ºC so that its flavors and complexity show at their best
Guía Peñín (Spain): 94 points.
James Suckling (Usa): 93 points. A creamy and beautiful wine with sliced pear and apple. Hints of white peach and lime too. Full body, lovely texture and a long and flavorful finish. This is made from a special plot of vineyards that have 50 years of age or more. Fermented and aged one year in a large 3,000 liter French oak cask. A stylish white. Electric.
